A somewhat profound story from “Genghis Khan and His Falcon”

Genghis Khan & Falcon

Genghis Khan & Falcon

I really like this short story/journal entry by Paulo Coelho in his book “Like the Flowing River.” Coelho is the author of “The Alchemist.” It really supports the two quotes at the end of the story. I think they are two ideals people should definitely consider in life when friends seem to be “funny” and “when we make decisions while we’re angry.”  (if you don’t have time to read the whole post, skip to the italics where the meat of this short story starts…)

“On a recent visit to Kazakhstan, in Central Asia, I had the chance to accompany some hunters who still use the falcon as a weapon. I don’t want to get into a discussion here about the word ‘hunt’, except to say that, in this case, Nature was simply following its course.

I had no interpreter with me, but what could have been a problem turned out to be a blessing. Unable to talk to them, I paid more attention to what they were doing. Our small party stopped, and the man with the falcon on his arm remained a little way apart from us and removed the small silver hood from the bird’s head. I don’t know why he decided to stop just there, and I had no way of asking. Read the rest of this entry »

King of Pop dead? Charlie’s Angel’s Queen of the blond hair do dead too?

25 06 2009
Micheal Jackson Dies?

Micheal Jackson Dies?

UPDATE: Looks like multiple sources are now saying the King of Pop is dead.  CNN reports “Pop icon Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports” and the New York Times says “Michael Jackson, 50, Is Dead.”

Thanks to my best friend’s sister Shirley, I just saw her status saying that TMZ.com reported Micheal Jackson died.  I looked on ABCNews.com and it says he’s suffered from a cardiac arrest, but hasn’t confirmed he has passed.  CNN reports the same and so doese the NYTimes.com.  Micheal Jackson (actually spelled “Michael” Jackson, but mispelled here just fyi) passing would really rock the music industry despite his lack of success in recent years.   I think he was trying to do a tour or something to make up for all his losses and lack of funds, but of course, he’s not the same as he was at his height.

CNN though has confirmed or reported that Farah Fawcett (rather Farrah Fawcett) of Charlie’s Angels fame has died.  She was 12 years older than Jackson.  She died of anal cancer. She was also known for literally having the blond hair do that every woman wanted at the time (which I believe was in the 1970’s).  She was THE sex symbol at the time.  She probably helped continue if not start a new wave of people LOVING blonds in the United States.

Farah Fawcett Passes

Farah Fawcett Passes

Two HUGE icons passing really makes this an interesting & sad day for the entertainment industry.  Not sure what to think of these two passing…(if it’s true that Michael Jackson died…)

“Live from Busan, South Korea, it’s…”

24 06 2009

efm logoSome of you already know, but I’ve accepted a job as the Evening Host of Busan’s English Radio station eFM.   The station is at 90.5 on the FM dial and the website is http://befm.co.kr (where you can also listen off the Internet).

I’ll be starting on Monday, July 6th (2009). It’s definitely not something I had planned on doing for this juncture in life, but it’s a welcome change to the relatively stressful life that I was living the past 3 years with Chungdahm Learning (in the Busan region). I may blog about my time at Injoong Education (the parent company of the Busan+ branches of Chungdahm Learning & April English), but that will take a bit of time to write…

I’m looking incredibly forward to this experience and thus far, I’ve learned:

  • I have some REALLY cool coworkers like my sweet & awesome Producer Hana Jo and stylish and kewl writer Ji-wook.  Other cool foreign coworkers like Matthew, Petra and Dennis also prove I’m simply lucky in finding quality coworkers.  Sohee & Haejin along with our cool Team Leader Mikyung also make the days extra special and of course our Executive Director Mr. Koo (General Manager) as well who seems very cool for Korean management. I love this movie…

14 06 2009

A_Moment_to_Remember_PosterI shared “A Moment to Remember” with a past coworker recently.  I remembered how much it made me tear up.

This morning, I woke up a bit early and it’s hard to get things done before 10a here in Korea.  So, I decided to rewatch it.  I’ve seen it a few times now, but it still lets me tear up quite easily.  The last clips in this Youtube playlist really make you want to grab some tissues.

It’s funny how direct translation of a title into English can be though.  The Korean title in English means, “In my head, there’s an eraser.”  The leads in the movie are both appealing characters.  You literally fall in love with both of them.  One quote in the movie I think is amazing to hear is “You’re a great husband.”  The male star really does epitomize what a husband should do in such a situation.   Read the rest of this entry »

It’s definitely not a life crisis or emergency and may be something secluded to us here in the Asian region (oh, did I ever mention Asia will represent MOST OF THE WORLD soon if not already?), but it’s annoying. I’ve been waking up a bit early and going to sleep later most days since getting back from a quick trip abroad. My body clock isn’t back to normal, but I also have a million things on my mind and feel like I need to do. Anyhoo, in the midst of all the stress, I have to admit facebook is a nice stress release. Did I say “stress release?”

Today it’s a STRESSOR instead of a stress relief.

I’ve tried to log in for the past hour and all I get is a page that hangs. You can see from these images that I have the hourglass icon because it’s hanging or the page displays improperly because I can’t get anything back from the Facebook servers.

Is it me?  Or did I just land in the country most well known for “drama?”

Just visited my great friend Derek at his wedding in Hawaii with the beautiful bride Bonnie and great friends.  It was seriously a beautiful wedding. Here’s the couple dancing to “Bella’s Lullaby” played by you would think a professional piano player, but rather by their niece “Rachel” who is AMAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZING!!!! (think of Will Ferrell yelling this like he did at the Harvard Commencement speech).

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could…

Not saying I wish to give my eyes to someone, but just to find someone you love that much…would be nice.

Six letters. Many combinations. Possibly the cure to all the world’s problems.

Six letters.

Many combinations.

Possibly the cure to all the world’s problems.

In Korea, this one word makes or breaks peoples’ lives. Without these, many go homeless. With these, many have a roof over their head. For many foreigners or expatriates who date Korean women, it’s our biggest hurdle in getting to know them. However, after we get to know them, our bonds can be tighter than superglue with the Korean women we might love. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the opposite of salutation? What do you call that the greeting at the end of a letter/email?

What is the antonym of salutation?

This is totally random, but today I was trying to tell someone how I failed to end the email properly.  Immediately, what popped into my head was “salutation” which of course means: “a word or phrase serving as the prefatory greeting in a letter or speech.”  As you can see, it is how we start the letter vs. ending the letter.

So, what do we call the greeting at the end before your signature? Read the rest of this entry »
