Korea ranks in the top 15% countries to live in

best place to liveAccording to a new report provided by the UN measuring Human Development in 182 countries, South Korea ranked #26 which would be in the top 15% of all nations studied. Korea ranks above other relatively developed countries which produce more gross income like China (#92), Mexico (#53) and India (#134). Korea still ranks behind many “Very Highly Developed” nations, but is ahead of countries like the Czech Republic, Portugal and Israel.  At the bottom of the list was Niger.

The full list follows and an explanation is provided at the bottom on how HDI or the Human Development Index is measured.

Koreas Exports

Koreas Exports

A lot of short term minded people are shaking in their boots recently due to currency shocks and the Korean stock indexes dropping almost as fast as the Nikkei dropped & rose in the past few days.  However, this little story may show why it’s hard to doubt the Koreans in business:

“…there was no shipbuilding industry in South Korea until the 1960s. When the country’s dictator, Park Chung-hee, summoned Chong [Hyundai’s founder] and told him to produce oil tankers, for which there was a sudden demand, Chong went straight to Greece and scooped up two contracts to build 260,000-tonne tankers, promising his customers delivery within two years, sooner than anyone else. He had neglected to mention that at that moment he lacked even a shipyard. He then waved the order in front of Barclays Bank, which lent him enough money to build a modern yard. No one in South Korea knew how to do that, so Chong dispatched 60 engineers to Scotland to learn. The ships were delivered before the deadline. This famous story, concedes Bruce Cumings of the University of Chicago in a refreshingly revisionist modern history, “Korea’s Place in the Sun”, may be apocryphal in its details, yet it has a strong whiff of truth about it.” Continue reading

Life

Alright, from now on, you’ll have to quote “Brandon Na” when this quote comes up in any publication.  I should now be trademarked as the one who thought this one up.  Ha, ha…

Basically, Life being a Lie if you remove the ‘f” was something I realized when trying to type ‘Life’ too fast in a browser search.  I came up with ‘Lie’ instead.

So, what does ‘f’ stand for?  I would argue “fun” and if you don’t have enough of it in life, then you really are living a lie.  🙂

Get ready for an onslaught of Korean Music Videos

I was in a Korean Music Videos mood today.  So, I surfed through a bunch via YouTube.com and threw a bunch of them them in here.  I know some of them are a little cheesy, but I’m o.k. with that since they’re for my ears.  If you enjoy as well, that’s fine, but these help me remember what I didn’t mind hearing/seeing earlier in terms of recent the Korean music front.

after the post: Noticed a few click overs from WordPress Tag’s category music.  This Japanese Jpop artist post wasn’t bad: http://halfpain.wordpress.com/2008/07/06/aiko-sakuranotoki I think the artist’s name is aiko sakuranotoki.

TOKYO – Japan has tried hard in recent years to shake its image as an overly insular society and offer a warmer welcome to foreign investors and tourists. But the country is about to impose strict immigration controls that many fear could deter visitors and discourage businesses from locating here. Continue reading
