Six letters.

Many combinations.

Possibly the cure to all the world’s problems.

In Korea, this one word makes or breaks peoples’ lives. Without these, many go homeless. With these, many have a roof over their head. For many foreigners or expatriates who date Korean women, it’s our biggest hurdle in getting to know them. However, after we get to know them, our bonds can be tighter than superglue with the Korean women we might love. Continue reading

Are the selfless really selfish?

selfishnessAt lunch with the other executives the othe day, we were sitting around after finishing our food for a few minutes discussing some work issues.  However, the issues sort of diverted onto a tangent about “doing things for the sake of one’s needs.”  So, I asked something that I’ve thought numerous times in life: “Do people who help others actually do it for themselves? …or for the others?”  What do you think? So, I’m just writing my latest post & I see what looks to be a new feature in the dashboard in WordPress called “Random hot post” which is titled: Semi-Nude Photos of 14-Year Old Draw Controversy.  I seem to recall the title from an article in one of the English Korean newspapers and click on it.  The link takes me to this blog I’ve seen a couple of times & I believe I may have even emailed the writer because he (I believe) is a fellow Busan resident.  His blog is called The Grand Narrative.  His goals of his blog are “providing an in-depth, often irreverent look at Korean social issues…examining issues in depth takes time, and so while this blog is not a daily source of news on Korea, it is ultimately a better means to understanding Korea than most of those sources provide…”  His purpose sounds basically academic and if you read the posts, he writes like an academic for the most part.  Continue reading

Most days, I don’t feel this is a REAL personal blog — writing about my life and about me.  The posts here are usually about what I’m thinking or what others are thinking & I find interesting.  However, I thought I’d write a tad about ME today…

Why all of a sudden?  Well, I just got the wind knocked out of me riding down the driveway of my building’s parking lot.  I thought to myself “Who in this world right now cares?”  Fortunately, the nice security guard/parking lot attendant came to my rescue and tried to help me.  After catching my breath, checking my leg to see if I was gushing out blood and if I could stand straight up despite what it felt to be a puncture into my rib cage, I told him I was o.k.  The point is that when things like this happen in our life, who ends up hearing about it?  Well, if we’re humble, very few learn about it.  Instead, you want your friends and family to at least hear about your well being.  So, I want the people who care to read about it now.  Continue reading

Free flights, Free housing and Easy work conditions?

Sounds like an advertisement from a con artist, doesnt it?  However, most of its true and tens of thousands of Americans, Canadians, Australians and other native English speaking citizens can give you living proof that its a fact.  Not only are many doing it every day, but many are also saving, paying off student loans and literally building more financial wealth than they could back home. Moreover, the friendships made, the contacts added to ones rolodex and the overall experience has given many justification in coming back (and in many cases making a career of it).  Continue reading

Just passed 10,000 views this month (with more than 11 days to go)…

I would have never imagined close to 10,000 people a month would visit this blog.  The keys: a bit of controversy stirred up by a little unfortunate event that happened a couple weeks ago, posts about Korean women & Korean music videos, a few posts about some handy Korean language phrases & an image about a dog that was attacked by a porcupine.  Oh, and maybe the other 450+ posts over the past 18 months.  Continue reading

What can I say?

I’ve been blogging quite a bit the past 18 months.  This will be my 501st post officially.  My 500th post was about the recent statistical & viral effects of complaints when they have affected more than just one person.

I guess I’m close to pacing at an average of one post a day since February 2007.  It has been interesting watching the statistics: Continue reading

Like I said “porcupines,” “Korean women” and many others like “how to say hello (or thank you) in Korean” are dominating the traffic on the blog these days.  For a snippet of the rest of the popular posts, check out the following WordPress stats for The Real “South” Korea: Continue reading

I helped Facebook drop 10% last month

So, the following Mashable Social Networking News story says Facebook is down 10% in April.

http://mashable.com/2008/05/20/facebook-traffic-decline/

I have to admit that I’m part of the problem.  I haven’t been visiting Facebook as often as I was at the beginning of our romantic affair.  At first, it was a pain getting to know her and making friends with her friends.   After I got to know all her social network, i was in love.  She had everything I wanted.  However, just like my first affair with Friendster, I’ve sort of fell out of love.  I did call Friendster up the other day, but I found that all of her friends have been peaking at pictures of me since January — when I supposedly last really visited.  I may have snuck a glance in between then and now to see her and her friends, but there’s definitely no more than just curiosity with her.  Like Friendster, I’m growing tired and bored with Facebook.  I’m sorry Facebook.  I know your Daddy Mark liked me a lot, but it’s not just about your family.    Continue reading

Was looking for something humorous, but found this best man’s speech instead…

Lots of views and it claims to be one of the best best men’s speeches on Youtube.

I don’t know about it being the funniest, but this reminded me a lot of my speech last year for my buddy Sun. Continue reading

The Korea Times seems to appreciate my opinions…

My second opinion went up just a few hours ago:

I had to truncate the original that was above 1500 words (published here a while back) to this 796 word version:

Advice for Teachers

By Brandon Na

I work with many English teachers on a daily basis. I’ve heard almost every story or complaint. Many come from a desire to improve the working environment and teach well.

At the same time, many complaints could have been easily solved by doing a bit of research on their school, asking specific questions and getting as much possible in writing. The following is my advice for future teachers who plan on teaching in Korea: Continue reading

I feel like I’ve had a bunch of food in my stomach for the past few weeks despite not eating…I even get hungry, but feel like I’ve just eaten a couple hot dogs despite my hunger. I literally feel like I have something in my stomach & I don’t know what to do about it.

Nevertheless, I thought this quote by Mailer was poignant or timely for my stomach’s weird feeling lately: Continue reading

Well, if you’ve been reading my blog at all, you can tell I’ve been quite active lately. Coincidentally, I’ve noticed that it’s National Novel Writing Month. I don’t know what to make of this story…

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071031-can-bloggers-be-journalists-federal-court-says-yes.html

I mean, do I have to start worrying about who I’m linking to or if I’m defaming someone now because this court case set the precedent? If so, there are going to be an awful amount of cases involving random people all throughout the world with all the blogs that are now being published. If it is a risk now to blog, I wonder what will happen to traffic moving forward. Will people still write their candid opinions at the speed which they do? Continue reading

Delays in publishing the books…

So, I’ve been planning to write 3 books recently and on top of that, I’ve just added 3 potential other topics I may be writing.  Unfortunately, I’d like to write book #1 regarding the past 10 years of my life right now, but due to work demands, I think I’ll need to write #4 in the list because it’s more germane to my daily life & will hopefully benefit the Korean population as a whole.  I’m aiming to write 3 chapters today (of course rough drafts), but we’ll see how it goes.
